Trauma

English

Trauma is the impact that a person experiences after confronted by an unpleasant experience that has had a devastating effect on that person.

The causes of trauma are numerous and may include such factors such as bereavement, addiction, violence, accidents and more often than not, crime.

In some cases the trauma may be brought about by the conditions under which people have to work. Police officers who are constantly under threat of death and who have experienced a number of incidents of shoot outs where they have lost colleagues, are an example of this category. The same applies to soldiers who have seen action and develop conditions referred to as battle fatigue, bomb shock, or Bossies

Being subjected to such conditions over extended periods may result in personality changes, substance abuse and a deterioration of family ties.

Like wise people who have been Survivors of violent crimes may experience a personality changes and become more aggressive, develop phobias or become suicidal.

Regrettably South Africa has become a hot spot for violent crime and the effect on the population has been devastating. Much of the road rage may be attributed to this.

Crisis intervention may help,  not only the Survivors, but also their immediate family to be able to understand these issues and to support their loved ones when they go through these phases.

Afrikaans
