Our precious Children

  • Teach your children never to get into a car with any strangers.

  • Parents must know whom their children are with.

  • Let children know that they have rights and that these rights must be respected.

  • Teach children to identify suspicious circumstances and to report these.

  • Children must be able to freely report improper behavior and improper language to parents, teachers and friends,  without fear of victimization.

  • Make sure that you can always contact your child.

  • Know your child, love your child, pray for your child, protect for your child, hug your child and spend time with your child.

Home Security

  • Make sure that your home is secure. Put deadbolts on the doors and good locks on the windows.

  • Change the locks when you move into a new place, or if your keys are stolen or lost.

  • Make sure your entrances are lit and install a peephole in your door.

  • Get to know your neighbours and keep an eye on one others property.

  • Inquire with the police if there is a neighbourhood watch or block parent program in your community.

  • When a stranger is on your property late at night, don't go out in the dark looking for him, chances are that he will be armed and waiting for you. Rather switch on your outside emergency lights and ensure that you are ready for confrontation. Alert the police and your neighbours.

  • Are your weapons in a safe and do you know where the key is at all times?

Home safety

  • In case of a fire, will you be able to easily get out of your dwelling, does the door open to the outside.

  • Do you have an escape plan, have you exercised it? Don't wait till it is too late!

  • Never overload any of the power outlets. If you can smell burning, identify and correct it.

  • Always totally unwind electrical leads before use. The may overheat due to the inductive nature of the winding.

  • Water and electricity do not mix, If any electrical equipment leaks water, take immediate action.

  • Is your home equipped with a smoke detector? Is it important to you?

  • Do you have a fire extinguisher, and do you know how to use it?

  • Are you aware of the danger of  incorrect storage of chemicals, for instance chlorine and most oils?

  • Are your household poisons safely stored behind lock and key?.

  • Are you medicines out of reach of children?

  • Is the swimming pool/fish pond or dam on you property safe for toddlers and people who cannot swim?

  • Are there any hidden pitfalls on your property or area, such as uncovered open bore holes or pits?

In the streets and at shopping centers

  • When walking, know where you are going

  • Stay on well lit streets

  • Don't obstruct your view with parcels that can slow you down

  • Pay attention to your instincts - If your gut tells you not to go one way, choose another path. If you feel you are being followed, quickly assess your options. Can you run or change direction?; are there people or houses you can run to?  Do what you can do fast. You may not be in danger, but it's best to play safe.

  • When drawing money from an ATM, ensure that it is safe to do so. If possible take someone with you to keep a look out for you. Avoid suspect conditions.

  • If you want to tip a parking attendant, don't fiddle with your purse getting change, have the money ready when you approach your vehicle.

In your car

  • Have your cell phone with you when you go on the road.

  • When you are driving or parking your car, use common sense to protect yourself

  • Lock your doors immediately and keep your windows up immediately after you get into your car.

  • Never pick up hitch hikers.

  • Be very careful before you pick up a stranded  motorist. If suspect call someone like the police to assist.

  • Park in well lit areas, and lock your car after parking.

  • Never leave valuables in the car when parked.

  • If your car breaks down, raise the bonnet and switch on the hazard lights. Stay inside the car with the windows and doors locked. Use you cell phone to get help ASAP. If help is offered assess the situation and if it is not safe, decline the offer and tell the person that help is on it's way.

  • Be alert when getting in or out of your car. Have your keys ready.

Sekerheid in en om die huis.

  • Maak seker dat u huis veilig toegesluit kan word.

  • Indien u sleutels verloor of dit gesteel is, vervang die slotte en kry nuwe sleutels.

  • Sorg vir goeie beligting by u deure en maak seker u weet wie is buite voor u oopmaak.

  • Ken jou bure. Kry hulle telefoonnommers en hou 'n oog oop vir mekaar se eiendom.

  • As daar 'n gebiedsbeskermingsaksie vir u omgewing is, raak betrokke daarby. Ondersteun die Gebieds Polisierings Forum (GPF).

  • Sorg dat u wapens veilig is en dat u weet waar die sleutel is, indien jy dit vinnig nodig mag kry.

  • Moenie as daar vreemdelinge op u erf in die aand is, in die donker uitgaan nie. Skakel eerder u buite sekerheidsligte aan en laat die bure en die SAPD weet. Sorg dat u bewapen is indien u aangeval word. Druk die noodknoppie van u alarm.

Veilgheid in en om jou woning

  • Kan jy en jou gesin maklik uit jou huis kom as dit brand?

  • Het julle 'n ontsnaproete en is dit ingeoefen? Moenie wag totdat te laat is nie!

  • Moet nooit kragpunte oorlaai nie. As jy die kragpunt kan ruik, stel dit reg.

  • Oprolkabels moet altyd uitgerol wees voordat dit gebruik word. Oorverhitting van sulke kabels agv die induktiewe las, kan dit uitbrand of beskadig.

  • As elektriese toerusting water lek, moet die lek dadelik herstel word. Water gelei krag en is lewensgevaarlik.

  • Het jou huis 'n brandblusser en rookverkliker? Is dit vir jou belangrik?

  • Weet watter chemiese middels nie saam geberg behoort te word nie, bv chloor en olie.

  • Sluit jou gifstowwe toe en sorg dat dit nie in die verkeerde hande beland nie.

  • Berg medisyne buite die bereik van kinders en oningeligte mense.

  • Is jou swembad, visdam, plaasdam veilig vir kinders? Waar moontlik moet dit beskerm word en kleuters moet daar weg gehou word.

  • Is daar om jou woning enige onbeskermde putte of boorgate waarin kinders kan val?

Op pad en by die winkelsentrums

  • Weet waarheen jy op pad is. Probeer om nie te verdwaal nie.

  • Sorg dat jy saan in goed beligte gebiede is en vermy twyfelagtige gebiede.

  • Moet jou self nie met pakkies so oorlaai dat jy nie meer behoorlik om jou kan oplet nie.

  • As jy om die een of ander rede onveilig of bedreig voel, sorg dat jy erens kan inbeweeg waar dit veilig is. Mens het tog 'n sesde sintuig wat jou waarsku (ons is net nie altyd goed daarop ingestel nie).

  • Waar moontlik neem iemand saam as jy by 'n OTM geld trek. As dit verdag voorkom, trek eerder elders geld.

  • As jy die karwag wil betaal, moenie in die straat met jou beursie staan en vroetel nie, wees gereed met die geld voordat jy die gebou verlaat. Dieselfde geld vir jou voertuig se sleutel.

In jou voertuig.

  • Vat jou selfoon saam as jy ry.

  • Wees versigtig en op die uitkyk as jy bestuur. Wees bedag op mense wat rondom afritte en robotte rond hang. Hou jou afstand agter die voertuig voor jou sodat jy, indien nodig kan uit beweeg.

  • Sluit jou deur en hou jou vensters toe.

  • Hou items buite sig wat aanleiding kan gee tot breek en gryp-  voorvalle by robotte, stopstrate en afritte.

  • Moenie rylopers oplaai nie.

  • Wees op jou hoede vir motoriste wat gestrand is, dit word soms as 'n lokval gebruik. Som die situasie goed op en bel vir hulp as dit verdag voorkom.

  • Parkeer waar daar goeie beligting is en dit veilig is.

  • Moet nooit items in die kar los terwyl dit geparkeer is nie.

  • As jou voertuig onklaar raak, bel vir hulp. As iemand hulp aanbied en dit kom verdag voor, se dat hulp reeds op pad is.
